Delta Symposium XVIX: Cultivating the Delta

Arkansas State University, Jonesboro, Arkansas

Call for Papers

The Department of English and Philosophy at Arkansas State University opens a call for papers and presentations for the nineteenth annual Delta Symposium on 17-20 April 2013. Individual presentations on any topic are welcome. Special consideration will be given to proposals that specifically address this year's theme of "cultivating the Delta." This theme invites participants to explore how residents of the Arkansas and Mississippi Deltas have cultivated the land and the region's culture with special focus on developing sustainable options for the future. The symposium hosts scholars and students of the humanities and social sciences, and features multidisciplinary presentations on topics ranging from blues, country and other forms of music associated with the Delta to historical and contemporary issues relevant to life in the region. This year's featured guests include folklorist, documentary filmmaker, writer and photographer Bruce Jackson; environmental activist and subject of the documentary Tree-Sit: The Art of Resistance Julie "Butterfly" Hill; and retired University of Arkansas English Professor and author of Born in the Delta and During Wind and Rain Margaret Bolsterli. The event offers a variety of presentations, including panels, concerts, keynote speakers, readings/signings by prominent writers, and an afternoon festival of roots music.
