What is Credit/No Credit (CR/NC) and how does it apply to my grades?
In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, both students and instructors at Arkansas State University requested guidance and a mechanism to review and revise grading during these extraordinary circumstances. A plan to allow students the ability to request a change from an assigned letter grade into a credit/no credit score for the Fall 2020 Semester was reviewed and proposed to Academic Affairs by the Faculty Senate.
Under the system adopted by the Chancellor and Provost, faculty and instructors would continue to assign letter grades at the end of the academic term. This allows the maximum amount of time for a student to weigh options. Students should visit with their academic adviser prior to requesting the change, and review the FAQ below.

What is credit/no credit (CR/NC) and how does it apply to my grades?
- Grades of CR (Credit) and NC (No credit) can be elected by students in lieu of a letter grade. In this case, students will either receive credit or no credit for the course and the grade will not impact students’ GPA. Quality points are not assigned to CR/NC. An explanation of CR/NC grading is on page 44 of the current Arkansas State University Undergraduate Bulletin.
- The option of CR will be given for grades of A, B, C, or D, and NC for a grade of F. Students should be aware that a grade of CR does not guarantee that this grade will satisfy specific program, major or university requirements. Students should check with their instructor to determine what minimum grade is necessary to satisfy a course requirement.
Who can use the CR/NC option?
- The CR/NC option is available to traditional students that are taking courses in Fall 2020.
- The CR/NC option is available to students on the A-State Queretaro campus.
- The CR/NC option is not available to students in the A-State Online programs.
- The CR/NC option is not available for courses taken during the December Interim period.
How will CR/NC grading work?
- Faculty will assign letter grades at the end of the Fall 2020 term.
- Students will be able to view their grade before requesting the “catastrophe appeal” to CR/NC by filing a request with the Registrar’s office for the change of grade.
- A request for each class for which a change of grade to CR/NC is desired must be submitted.
- Registrar’s office will maintain a historical record of all grades.
- A grade of CR/NC will NOT affect a student’s current overall grade point average (GPA).
How credit/non-credit works on semester GPA:
- As an example, if a student had 12 hours in four, three-credit hour classes and received grades of A, B, D, and F, under the temporary credit/no credit policy, the student can elect to keep the A and B, fill out one change to convert the D into a CR (and receive credit for the course), and fill out a second change to have the F converted into NC. Since neither CR or NC calculate in GPA, the GPA for the semester will be 3.5 based on the A and B. Without the grade changes, the GPA would be a 2.0. The student in this example earns nine total hours of course credit (the A, the B and the CR = 9 hours; the NC = 0 hours).
What are the deadlines to make a decision?
- Students must request a change by Monday, January 18 at 12 p.m.
What considerations are important when making this decision?
Accepting a letter grade or a grade of CR/NC may have an impact on a student’s GPA, eligibility in academic programs and organizations, as well as impact the student’s academic standing. Students are strongly encouraged to visit with an academic adviser when making this decision. Below are some points of consideration.
- Students enrolled in some pre-professional programs, plan to transfer to another institution, or attend graduate school may be disadvantaged by the CR/NC grade. Thus, all students should visit with their academic adviser prior to requesting the change.
- Students who change their grade to a CR/NC, in a prerequisite course, may be required to repeat the course. For example, if a grade of “C” or higher is required in a course in order to proceed to another course, students should keep their letter grade of A, B, or C in order to meet the prerequisite requirement. Be sure to check the A-State Bulletin and visit with your program adviser.
- Students should review their program admission requirements and minimum GPA requirements and consider if a required grade is necessary to be admitted into or remain in a major program. Check with your program adviser if uncertain.
- Changing a grade to CR/NC may have financial implications for some students. Students are encouraged to consult with A-State’s Financial Aid and Scholarships office or the Registrar’s office for matters related to VA benefits.
- Changing a grade to CR/NC may impact designation for the semester Honor Roll (such as Dean’s List) and graduation Latin Honors designations (such as cum laude)
- A letter grade may maximize the impact of the A-State Repeat policy. If a student is enrolled in a course for Fall 2020 for which they plan to use as a replacement grade for a previous course, a letter grade may be the better option. Please see your adviser or check the bulletin for more on the repeat policy.
- Students involved in club or sponsored NCAA sports should check with their athletic adviser.
- Students who participate in Greek Life or extracurricular activities may want to visit with a representative of Student Life to discuss GPA requirements.
- For students on academic suspension, if you believe switching your Fall 2020 grades to credit/no credit will improve your standing, it is advised that you submit your request before the start of the Spring 2021 term so that you are eligible to register for classes.
