Flute

Undergraduate 

  • Undergraduate applicants should prepare one lyrical and one technical solo/etude. ASBOA All-State etudes meet these requirements. Examples of appropriate solo works include:

    • Gaubert Fantaisie 
    • Fauré Fantaisie 
    • Chaminade Concertino 
    • Ganne Andante et Scherzo 
  • Major scales and chromatic scale (2-3 octaves) 
  • Sight-reading

Graduate

Applicants to the Master of Music program should prepare:

  • Exposition of 1st Movement of Mozart Concerto (G or D) without cadenza
  • A contrasting solo piece or movement from a sonata or concerto
  • 2 orchestral excerpts from the following: 

    • Beethoven's Leonore #3, allegro, bars 328-360
    • Brahms' Symphony No. 4 in E minor, mvt. 4, mm. 89-105
    • Debussy's Afternoon of a Faun, first 4 bars and rehearsal numbers 2-3
    • Mendelssohn's A Midsummer Night's Dream, Scherzo

Oboe

Undergraduate 

  • Undergraduate applicants should prepare one lyrical and one technical solo/etude. ASBOA All-State etudes meet these requirements. 
  • Major scales and chromatic scale (2 octaves when possible)

Graduate 

Applicants to the Master of Music program should prepare

  • Movement of a Concerto 
  • Contrasting solo piece or movement from a Sonata or Concerto 
  • 2 orchestral excerpts to be selected from:

    • Ravel Le Tombeau de Couperin: Prelude m. 1 to #4 
    • Rossini La Scala di Seta: Pickup to m. 6 through #1 and 4 measures before #2 through #3. 
    • Beethoven 3: Mvt 2 m. 7-56 
    • Brahms Violin Concerto: Mvt 2 m. 1-32 
    • Tchaikovsky Symphony #4: Mvt 2 m. 1-21 
    • Stravinsky Pulcinella Suite Mvt. 4 Theme and Variation 1

Clarinet

Undergraduate

  • Undergraduate applicants should prepare one lyrical and one technical solo/etude. ASBOA All-State etudes meet these requirements. Examples of appropriate solo works include:

    • Selections from the clarinet Concert & Contest Collection (edited by Rubank)
    • Sonata by Saint-Saens
    • Concertino by Weber
    • Fantasy Pieces by Schumann
    • One solo containing both lyrical and technical sections also meets the audition requirements.
  • Major scales (2-3 octaves) and full-range chromatic scale. 
  • Sight-reading

Graduate

Applicants to the Master of Music program should prepare three works in contrasting styles (15-20 minutes of music total).

  • A movement from a Classical or Romantic-era work (for example: the Mozart Concerto or Brahms Sonatas)
  • A 20th or 21st century work (for example, the Hindemith Sonata, Stravinsky Three Pieces, or Copland Concerto)
  • A third contrasting work. This requirement may also be met by preparing 3-4 standard orchestral excerpts (for example, the Mendelssohn Scherzo, Beethoven Sixth Symphony, or Brahms Third Symphony).

Bassoon

Undergraduate 

  • Undergraduate applicants should prepare one lyrical and one technical solo/etude. ASBOA All-State etudes meet these requirements. 
  • Major scales and chromatic scale (2 octaves when possible)
  • Sight-reading 

Graduate 

Applicants to the Master of Music program should prepare:

  • The first movement of a Concerto by Mozart, Weber or Vivaldi and one slow movement, choice of applicant.
  • All major and minor scales full range as possible. 
  • Forms such as Oubradous, Giamperi or Weissenborn (Morelli) may be read.

Undergraduate 

  • Undergraduate applicants should prepare one lyrical and one technical solo/etude. ASBOA All-State etudes meet these requirements. Applicants may audition/major on any consort member.

Graduate

Applicants to the Master of Music program may audition/major on any consort member and should prepare:

  • All major and minor scales
  • One concert etude (Bozza, Lauba, Ferling, etc.)
  • Two contrasting solo movements from the following:
    • "Elegie" - Feld
    • "Aeolia Song" - Benson
    • "Sonata" - Creston
    • "Prelude, Cadence et finale" - Alfred Desenclos
    • "Brilliance" - Gotkovsky
    • "Elegie et Rondeau" - Husa
    • "Sonata" - Muczynski
    • "Trigon, Op.31" - Cunningham
    • "Diversions" - Gould
    • "Sonata" - Stein
    • "Six Suites for Cello" - Bach/Kynaston
    • "Sonata" - Harley
    • "Sonatina" - Worley
