The Radical Writes Conference is a graduate student conference that highlights writers who produce innovative and distinctive creative and critical work in its multitude of forms. Students are welcome to submit poetry, creative nonfiction, and fiction or works pertaining to composition and rhetoric, critical theory, literature, and related fields of study. In addition to conference participants’ presentations, conference attendees can expect panels on topics related to professionalization and opportunities for networking with publishers.

We are proud to announce that best-selling author Jose A. Rodriguez will be the keynote speaker. This event is free and open to the public. He will read from his new memoir, A House Built on Ashes, which you can find hereHis poetry collections include The Shallow End of Sleep (2011,Tia Chucha Press/Northwestern UP) and Backlit Hour (2013, SFASU Press/Texas A&M UP). His work has appeared in various journals and magazines, including Poetry, The New Republic, Paterson Literary Review, Green Mountains Review, Lake Effect, Cream City Review, Water-Stone Review, Tusculum Review, Upstreet, Big Muddy, Paddlefish, and others. He's the recipient of the 2014 RHINO Founders' Prize, the 2009 Allen Ginsberg Poetry Award and four nominations for the Pushcart Prize. 

Students who attend or present at the conference can expect the following:

  • Presentation Sessions: Thursday and Friday, April 13-14
  • Keynote Presentation: Thursday Night, April 13 at 7 p.m.
  • Creative Writing Open Mic and Mixer: Friday night after panels
  • Another great line for your CV to help you compete in today’s hiring market!

Lodging information: There is a block of rooms available at the A-State rate for conference presenters at the Fairfield Inn in Jonesboro. You can call (870) 934- 1600 to book your room or visit the Res-Link. The group code is SRCO and the rate is $109. We also have faculty and students who are happy to host conference participants in their homes.

Airport Information: Memphis is the closest national airport (approx. 1 hour away). If you're not interested in renting a car or taking the shuttle from Memphis, we do have a small commuter airport in Jonesboro that has some flights from Memphis, St. Louis, and Little Rock. FYI, last time we hosted this conference, some people connected through our conference page on Facebook and shared rides from the airport.
