Base Navigation for Students

Base Navigation is a modern, intuitive menu that lives outside of courses. It includes links to new pages such as the Activity Stream, Calendar, Messages, etc. that provide quick access to the most critical information consolidated from all your courses.

When you select any link from the left-hand Base Navigation menu, you see a global view across all your courses. The Base Navigation menu remains in view as you move from page to page—even when you're in a course. As you open pages, they open as layers. Close the layers to return to a previous page or the menu.

UBN

From the moment you log in, you have access to core features in the menu where your name appears. You can easily return to the menu from wherever you are—even if you're in a course. You'll see the menu peeking from behind the other layers you have open.

When you select any link from the menu, you see a global view of your courses. For example, Grades shows your scores in all courses—you don't have to navigate to each one.

Institution Page

From the base navigation your Institution Page is always within reach. The Institution Page is the go-to resource for your academic community. Find resources, useful links, and other important content related to your institution.

Profile
In the list where your name appears, select your name to access your profile. Your profile appears with some information, and you can't delete your profile. Students can edit certain parts of their profile.
- Profile picture: Upload a picture to replace the generic silhouette.
- Global Notification Settings: Set up notifications for course activities.
- Cloud Storage Accounts: Access your files in cloud storage.
Name and Email Changes

Students cannot change their name or email address in Blackboard. The Name displayed in Blackboard reflects what is in Banner. Official Name and Email changes are processed through the Registrar's office.

Password Changes

Students can update their Blackboard password at https://webapps.astate.edu/digitalid/index.htm.

How to add/update a Profile Picture

Students can add a personal profile picture.

On the Profile page.
1. Point to the generic silhouette or your picture and select the pencil icon to upload, change, or remove an image.
2. In the panel, select Upload new profile picture to browse for your picture on your computer. Or, you can drag a file to the Upload area. Your image is saved automatically.
3. Close the panel to return to your profile.
About notification settings

The notification system is always on. On your activity stream's Notification Settings panel, you can choose which notifications you receive about activity in all your Original and Ultra courses:

Activity stream: Choose which activities appear on your Stream page.

Email: Students will receive a daily digest type email will new activity from their currenty courses.

Push notifications: Messages pop up on your mobile device if you have the Blackboard app for students installed. You can select which notifications are sent to your device.

Note: If you are not receiving Notifications from Blackboard, 1) check your junk mail and 2) check that you do have the email address "do-not-reply@blackboard.com" blocked in your email. See the Proofpoint User Guide for information about blocked senders.
Activity Stream
The up-to-the-minute activity stream lets you jump directly into course actions. You don't need to dig through the system, search for deadlines, or miss assignments and tests.

Activity Stream Categories

Activity stream items are grouped into four categories to make the list easier to scan:
1. Upcoming: View your top five events that will happen in the next seven days. Select Show More for a complete list. This section doesn't appear if no upcoming events are available.
2. Today: See everything happening and due in the next 24 hours, including institution-wide announcements about emergency notifications and updates. If your instructors added announcements, they appear here or in the Recent section.
3. Recent: If you haven't checked in for a bit, view stream items that were previously in the Today section over the last seven days.
4. Important: See overdue assignments, tests, and graded discussions. The number of items in this section makes up the count shown by Activity Stream in the list where your name appears.
Note: If you dismiss an item in the Important section, you won't be able to view it again, even if you sign out and sign in again.

Note: When you dismiss a stream item, the original content isn't affected. You just remove the notification from the activity stream.
Calendar
From the global calendar in the Base Navigation, you can see all your upcoming due dates and other important dates across your courses—all in one place.

You can choose your view your calendar
- Select Day or Month to zoom in on one day's tasks or plan for the weeks ahead.
- Select Due Dates to focus only on your upcoming deadlines.

Grades

The Ultra Base Navigation allows students to view and access all your grades in one place. Your grades are organized by course name and term in alphabetical order. You can select most items in any course to view details.

Want to dive in and focus on one course? Select a course name to go to that course's grades page. You may have two types of courses.
