Sympathy to the Family and Colleagues of Dr. David Agnew

JONESBORO -- The Arkansas State University community today extends sympathy to the family and colleagues of Dr. David Agnew, professor of agricultural education, who died suddenly this morning.

Dr. Agnew had served on the A-State faculty since 1990. He was promoted to associate professor in 1998, and professor in 2009.  He earned his bachelor's degree at University of Tennessee-Martin, and his master's and doctoral degrees at Mississippi State University.  In addition to his classroom responsibilities, Agnew was known throughout the region for his work with the Future Farmers of America and the organization's youth development activities.

His outreach and extracurricular activities included:

  • Alpha Tau Alpha adviser
  • National ATA Officer FY2014 and FY2015
  • Attendance at ATA Conclave every year
  • Developed and edited College Newsletter
  • Director of Ag Student Leadership Conference (25 years)
  • Member of the Board of the Literacy League of Craighead, Poinsett, & Greene Counties 2006-2018
  • Attended State and National FFA Convention every year
  • Coordinator for Eastern FFA District CDE’s and LDE’s
  • College Nominee for A-State Faculty Award for Service (2016)
  • Vocational Technical Administration graduate degrees offered online -
    Fall 2015
  • Adviser for A-State Student Garden Club
  • Marshal for the college at summer commencements

Survivors include his wife, Nelvia, and sons James and John.

Funeral service will be held at 9:30 a.m. on Thursday Jan.18, in Emerson Memorial Chapel in Jonesboro with Bro. Bobby Barnett and Father Phillip Rogers officiating. Burial will be in the Lake Hill Memory Garden in Bethel Springs, Tenn.

Visitation will be held from 5-7:00 p.m. on Wednesday Jan. 17, in Emerson Memorial Chapel.
