Why did you choose A-State?:
I love the location and feel of A-State. I grew up in a small southern town, and Jonesboro has a small town feel with big town amenities. And I love that the community has such a strong sense of A-State school spirit.
What makes a good professor?
Good professors have passion for what they’re teaching. They’re lifelong learners, and they show a willingness to learn from their students.
Who was your favorite teacher (and why)?
My favorite teacher is my doctoral advisor Dr. Dee Ray at the University of North Texas. She taught me the importance of believing in myself and putting my whole heart into everything I do. Through her belief in me, she showed me the power of believing in my students and their potential for success.
What makes for a good student?
Good students show curiosity and a desire for learning. They push themselves to grow personally and professionally, and they take responsibility for their education.
What’s the value of a university education?
A true education should provide opportunities for personal development and academic learning. It should prepare you for a successful and meaningful life outside the classroom.
If you could teach another field, which one and why?
I can’t imagine doing anything else. I love my job!
What is the one thing you wish you could teach everyone about your field?
I wish everyone truly understood the power of genuine and authentic connections with other people. Healthy relationships are becoming harder to find in today’s society, and the impact is reflected in an increase in mental health issues in children and adults. Often what is most healing about a counseling relationship is the safety, support, and encouragement clients are missing in their lives. Counselors help clients be authentic with themselves and with others, and in turn, they develop self-insight and the self-confidence to create positive changes in their lives.
What are you working on right now?
I’m very excited to be working with Dr. Lacy Overley to establish a graduate certificate in play therapy program. Current students in A-State’s counseling programs and mental health professionals practicing in the Jonesboro area can enroll in our courses to obtain advanced training in play therapy and seek certification as Registered Play Therapists.
Before you retire I want to...
open a private practice providing play therapy and counseling services to children and families.
In college, I was known for...
being highly productive at 2 a.m., and I haven’t grown out of this. I’m still a night owl. I get a lot of work done at night, whether it’s writing, grading, cleaning, or shopping for groceries!
My favorite motion picture is...
Steel Magnolias, Forrest Gump, and almost anything Disney/Pixar.
The television series I must TiVo...

The last book I read for fun was...
The Hunger Games series.

If I could travel anywhere it would be...
almost anywhere. I love to travel.
The best advice I ever received was...
Trust yourself. It’s not always easy, but things tend to work out better when I trust my own judgment and follow my instincts.
What is the one thing I’ve learned I’d tell my college self...
Have more fun and take some art classes!
My hobby is...
all kinds of arts & crafts. I like knitting, scrapbooking, card-marking, and I recently learned embroidery.
My passion is...
As a play therapist, I have passion for helping children and families. I feel fortunate to be a researcher which allows me opportunities to provide free play therapy to children who would otherwise not receive the mental health services they need.
My favorite meal is...
almost anything with meat and potatoes, followed by a cheesecake.
A perfect day is...
a lazy day- sleeping late, curled up on the couch, watching movies, and eating good food.

the abundance of Mexican food and Andy’s Frozen Custard!
Cats or dogs?
Dogs! My favorite is my furbaby schnauzer-mix, Paddie.
E-book or hardback?
Hardback. I absolutely love books, maybe even a little too much. Just visit my office and you’ll see! For the sake of space, I’ve tried to learn to like the e-book, but it just doesn’t work for me.
Beach or mountains?
I wish I could...
speak multiple languages.
Only my friends know I...
I’m a Nintendo nerd. I love playing Mario, Yoshi, and Donkey Kong games. I own every Nintendo gaming system that’s ever been made.
