ASU Board of Trustees Elects Officers, OKs In-State Tuition for R.O.T.C. Cadets

12/14/2013

JONESBORO, Ark. — The Arkansas State University Board of Trustees today elected officers for 2014 and expanded in-state tuition rate eligibility for military service.

Dan Pierce of Jonesboro, a retired banker and real estate developer and 1972 graduate of Arkansas State, was elected chairman. He will succeed Mike Gibson of Osceola, who is completing 10 years of service on the board that included two terms as chairman. Charles Luter of Paragould was elected vice chairman, and Howard Slinkard of Rogers was elected secretary.

The board also voted to offer in-state tuition rates to all U.S. Army Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC) cadets as part of its 2011 initiative authorizing the rates to all persons serving in the U.S. military. The previous ASU System policy did not specifically address ROTC students, who sign an enlistment contract and on the date of signature become members of the military.

In other business, the Board approved:

• A proposal to sell property on the ASU-Mountain Home campus to the Arkansas State Highway and Transportation Department for $4,450. The property will accommodate a roadway expansion that will benefit the campus by improving access from U.S. Hwy. 62.

• A-State’s requests to offer an emphasis in behavior analysis in the Bachelor of Science in Psychology degree and an emphasis in collaborative piano performance in the Master of Music in Performance degree.

• ASU-Mountain Home’s requests to offer an Associate of Applied Science in Workforce Technology degree with an emphasis in automotive system repair; a technical certificate and a certificate of proficiency in automotive system repair; an Associate of Applied Science in Workforce Technology degree with an emphasis in heating, ventilation, and air conditioning; and a technical certificate and a certificate of proficiency in heating, ventilation and air conditioning.

• ASU-Beebe’s request to offer a technical certificate and a certificate of proficiency in office assistant as programs that take one year to complete.

• A contract for the Tommy Raffo Winter Baseball Camps at A-State.
