A-State Rugby Falls To Virginia Tech in Penn Mutual Tournament

06/03/2018

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. — Arkansas State University dropped a close match to Virginia Tech, 15-7, Sunday morning in the plate quarterfinals to end its journey in the Penn Mutual Sevens Collegiate Rugby Championship.

“We came out flat against Virginia Tech and they made us pay,” said head coach Blake White. “I’m really proud of our guys’ effort this weekend. We just lacked in execution throughout.”

After going 2-1 in opening pool play, the Red Wolves moved to the plate bracket to face Virginia Tech in the second day. A-State came into plate as the No. seed.

White, in his first year as head coach, expressed pride in his team and staff for the season.

“Zach Young really stood out as the top collegiate sevens player in the U.S. in my opinion,” he continued. “Unfortunately, Zach has a shoulder injury that prevented him from playing day two.

“I’m very excited about the future of our program. We have a lot of very talented and hard working players coming in. Above all else, they’re good young men who are what I really look for in recruits.”
