A-State Homecoming 2013: 'Ignite the Tradition: #PackPride,' Oct. 7-12

JONESBORO – The Arkansas State University Alumni Association and Student Leadership Center have lined up a full slate of activities for Homecoming 2013, Oct. 7-12.  The theme of the A-State Homecoming 2013 is “Ignite the Tradition: #PackPride.”

The week of activities at A-State culminates with several special events, reunions, and the Homecoming football game with the Red Wolves taking on Idaho, Saturday, Oct. 12.  All alumni and friends of the university along with their families are invited to attend.

The ribbon-cutting ceremony for Sorority Row will be a featured event of this year’s Homecoming festivities.  Members, alumni, family and friends of five national sorority chapters, which have occupied stately new houses along Aggie Road, will gather at 11 a.m. at the Sorority Row pergola. (Inclement weather alternate site will be lobby of Red WOLF Center.)

Speakers will include Taylor Gee of Nashville, Tenn., president of the National PanHellenic Council, and Dr. Tim Hudson, chancellor. After the ceremony, each sorority -- Alpha Gamma Delta, Alpha Omicron Pi, Chi Omega, Delta Zeta, and Zeta Tau Alpha -- will host a private dedication ceremony for their respective house.

Students will participate during the week in various competitive campus activities.

Introduction of the Homecoming Court and Little Mr. and Little Miss ASU, followed by the crowning of the Homecoming King and Queen, will highlight the pregame festivities on Saturday.

The Homecoming schedule also includes a free All-Alumni pre-game tailgate party at the Cooper Alumni Center, recognition of ASU Distinguished Alumni at halftime of the football game, and reunions for academic units, baseball, and cheerleading.

Friday events

The class of 1963 will be formally recognized at its Golden Anniversary Reunion Friday morning. 

Proceeds from the 10th annual ASU Open at Sage Meadows will benefit the Red Wolves Foundation.  Tee time is 8 a.m.

The Strong-Turner Alumni Chapter (S-TAC), a chapter of the ASU Alumni Association focusing on African-American alumni and friends of the university, will host its Friday night social from 9 p.m. to midnight at the ASU Pavilion.

Saturday activities

On Saturday morning, Oct. 12, the College of Media and Communication will host an open house from 9‑9:45 a.m.  At 10 a.m., this year’s alumni seminar speaker will be Jennifer Winningham, a senior marketing analyst for Verizon.

The Strong-Turner Chapter will hold its annual business meeting in the Carl R. Reng Student Union at 10 a.m.

The College of Nursing and Health Professions will conduct its recognition ceremony for outstanding alumni from 3-3:30 p.m. in Room 222.

The Red Wolf Walk through Tailgate City to Liberty Bank Stadium starts at 3:45, followed by the ASU Alumni Association’s free pre-game tailgate party at the Cooper Alumni Center, 2600 Alumni Boulevard, from 4-5:30 p.m.  All alumni, friends of the university and their families are invited.

Additional activities at Tailgate City include gatherings hosted by the Colleges of Humanities & Social Sciences, Media & Communication, Nursing & Health Professions, Sciences and Mathematics, the Honors College Association, and the Strong-Turner Chapter.

The Homecoming game kick-off is set for 6 p.m.  Game tickets are available through the ASU Central Box Office at (870) 972-2781 or online at http://www.astate.edu/tickets/.

At halftime, the Arkansas State University Alumni Association will honor three outstanding individuals in its 30th year of recognizing distinguished alumni.  The ASU Alumni Association’s board of directors annually selects recipients of the Distinguished Alumni award from nominations submitted by the public.  This year’s honorees are Darrel Cunningham of Fort Smith, Danny Ford of Rector, and Roy Ockert of Jonesboro.
