Dr. Robert L. Potts, chancellor of Arkansas State University-Jonesboro, appointed a committee in May 2007 to study the Indian mascot and nickname issue. This committee which was chaired by Jim Pickens, immediate past chair of the ASU Board of Trustees, has concluded their review and recommended to the chancellor that the use of Native American imagery be retired from the promotion of our athletic teams and a new mascot and imagery be selected. Dr. Potts has concurred with the committee’s recommendation and has named a Mascot Selection Steering Committee to guide the next steps in this process. A formal process for the public to submit mascot names has been developed and posted on the University’s web site. In the interim comments may be directed to mascot@astate.edu.
