The Southern Early Childhood Association (SECA) honored Woodie Sue Herlein, program coordinator in Childhood Services, with the 2024 SECA Rich Scofield Memorial Scholarship award, which recognizes outstanding work in the field of out-of-school time (OST) programming. Herlein, who has guided OST projects at Childhood Services since 2000, was involved with the Governor’s Task Force on After School and Summer Programs and the development of stand-alone licensing standards for OST facilities.

Jessica Cooper, assistant professor of medical imaging and radiation sciences, won a national election to become the cardiac interventional and vascular interventional chapter delegate and vice chair for the American Society of Radiologic Technologists House of Delegates, the governing body responsible for professional practice standards. Kendall Youngman, assistant professor of medical imaging and radiation sciences, was elected as first alternate for the computed tomography chapter delegate position.

Dr. Ehsan Naderi, assistant professor of electrical engineering, co-authored research published in Energy. Naderi and associates from Brazil and Spain propose an optimal strategy to minimize energy waste in power distribution systems through load control mechanisms and reshaping the demand profile. They concluded voltage deviations and technical losses can be mitigated by scheduling the demand and efficiently controlling the capacitor banks, resulting in technical and economic benefits for the distribution network.

Comments from Dr. David M. Pearlman, associate professor of hospitality, and director of the hospitality management program, were featured with WalletHub's survey regarding tipping. Pearlman discussed current trends in tipping customs and practices, pointing out technology changes and economic issues that were raised in the survey along with their impact, both on consumers and service workers. Claire Abernathy, Caisa Sanburg and Jeff McLaughlin, associate professors of theatre, served as designers for The Link Theatre Company's production of Into the Woods at Fowler Center. Abernathy designed the actors’ costumes, while Sanburg designed the lighting and sound. McLaughlin designed the scenery and properties. The Link Theatre Company aims to create compelling musicals, plays, concerts and other cultural experiences through innovative design and imaginative storytelling while engaging Broadway, university, and local and regional talent.
