Honors Thesis Grant Program


Amount and Term of Award

Awardees of this program will receive $500 in the fall semester to purchase supplies, materials, and equipment to work on an Honors thesis with a College of Sciences and Mathematics faculty member.

Qualifications for Receiving Award
  • Enrolled in the Honors Program.
  • Successfully defended Honors Thesis Proposal.
  • Must have a College of Sciences and Mathematics Mentor.
Qualifications for Maintaining Award

One additional semester of funding ($500) may be awarded in the spring semester with submission of a 1-page progress report by December 1.

Application

The application for this program is a defended and accepted Honors thesis proposal accompanied by a budget for the estimated cost of the study.

Application Deadline

All proposals must be received by the Office of the Dean by May 1, and funding announcements will be made by June 1.

Other Comments

Successful grantees are expected to present their research at Create@State in the spring semester following their award. Presentation at other venues are strongly encouraged. Because these are coming from professional development funds, they cannot support student tuition, stipends, or travel.

Teaching Undergraduates through Research Fellowship (TURF) Program


Amount and Term of Award

Based upon the statewide SURF program, this grant opportunity will fund $1,000 of supplies, materials, and equipment for any undergraduate working with a College of Sciences and Mathematics faculty member.

Qualifications for Receiving Award
  • While the SURF grants have a minimum GPA requirement, this program will not.
  • Must have a College of Sciences and Mathematics Mentor.
Qualifications for Maintaining Award

The funds for the award will be available for one year.

Application

The application for this program will consist of a student vita, a 1-page proposed research abstract, a research proposal of not more than 5 pages, and a proposed budget.

Application Deadline

The deadline for all applications will be December 1, with announcements of the awards occurring in the spring.

Upper Delta Region Biodiversity Scholarship


Amount and Term of Award
  • Undergraduate: $6400 per academic year, payable at $3200 per semester
Qualifications for Receiving Scholarship
  • Undergraduate:
    • Must be considered a sophomore in Fall 2017, majoring in biology with an emphasis in: botany; zoology; or wildlife, fisheries and conservation.
    • Must be a U.S. citizen, permanent resident, national or refugee.
    • Must demonstrate financial need.
    • Must have an interest in learning about and researching biodiversity, conservation, ecology or taxonomy by using or making natural history collections.
Qualifications for Maintaining Scholarship

Scholarship students are part of a three-year cohort program; reapplication is not necessary. Students will take one predetermined three-credit course during the Fall and Spring semesters. These courses fulfill an elective requirement for students in the aforementioned majors. Scholarship recipients are also expected to spend 20 hours per week involved in the research project that is selected for them. Participation in the scholarship program’s annual summer institute is also expected; travel support is provided.
