Biography

Yeonsang Hwang is an Assistant Professor at Arkansas State University and a Hydrologist, most interested in the study of impact of climate variability on water systems using hydrologic modeling or statistical approaches. Before he joined ASU, he stayed 2 years at Valparaiso University in Indiana for undergraduate teaching. His research works have been mostly done through the support from two NOAA RISA (Regional Integrated Sciences and Assessments) programs in Colorado (WWA, Western Water Assessment) and South Carolina (CISA, Integrated Sciences and Assessments). RISA teams are organized to develop and deliver water/climate related information and research results to various stakeholders through interdisciplinary setup. Active social scientists and policy researchers as well as hydrologists and climate scientists work closely together in RISA teams.

The recent research at Carolinas Integrated Science and Assessment (CISA, South Carolina's RISA team) includes ensemble forecast of drought indices using autoregressive models and a residual re-sampling technique. This research is a response to the regional stakeholders in South Carolina who need reliable and comprehensive drought forecasting. The developed forecast tool uses drought history and climate outlook to produce probabilistic forecasts using ensemble members.

As a research member and a water engineer he worked for LG Engineering and Construction from 1993 to 2001.  He was involved in various projects related to water resources, water quality issues, and other general civil engineering problems. With these engineering experiences, he has been registered as a professional engineer in Korea.

Currently his academic commitments are in Civil Engineering and advising commitment in the Department of Construction Science & Organizational Leadership at Purdue University. He is a great advocate of adaptive teaching and interactive learning experience.
