Research Interests

One of our current projects focuses on the use of small molecule gas phase molecular spectroscopic methods to develop high spectral resolution databases for select radionuclide, explosives and other threat agents of interest. One of the challenges associated with real time detection of explosives for example is that most energetic compounds have prohibitively low vapor pressures for most existing sensor technology. Research from the canine community has suggested that explosive trained dogs do not alert off a response to a pure compound, but rather a complex vapor bouquet of impurities which are present due to manufacturing processes or are natural degradation products. These impurities are typically far more volatile than the explosives themselves which may ultimately aid in detection. Unfortunately, the available high resolution spectral signature information for most of these compounds is either insufficient or completely non-existent.
