Dr. Karen Allen
Chair of Social Work
Professor of Social Work
Karen Neuman Allen received her bachelor’s degree in Social Psychology from Oakland University, MSW in Social Work Administration and Ph.D. in Education from Wayne State University. After receiving her MSW, she worked for fifteen years in health care as a medical social worker and administrator. Her clinical practice involved counseling individuals and families with severe illnesses and traumas such as burns, spinal cord injuries, head injuries, cancer and strokes. She also supervised various hospital social work and case management departments which included quality assurance and continuous quality improvement activities.
Her research interests include domestic violence, trauma and chronic illness as well as social work education and pedagogy. She is currently the Chair of the Social Work Department at Arkansas State University and serves on the editorial review boards for Social Work in Health Care and Social Work in Mental Health. She teaches social welfare policy, grant writing and community and organizational social work practice.
