Research Interests

Microbiology

I have past experience in biodegradation of plastics, prevalence and identification of Staphylococcus, and various topics in microbial ecology and physiology.

In retirement, I remain active in the research lab of Dr. Abrar M. Alam, Associate Professor of Chemistry, helping to develop new antimicrobial compounds. We study the efficacy and mode of action of novel organic compounds based on the pyrazole nucleus. Many of the compounds show high potency against Gram positive bacteria. Other compounds show anti-cancer activity. Undergraduates are always welcome to participate in research in our labs, and Masters and Ph.D. students are also welcome to apply.
