The Centennial Celebration involved two years of activities marking the 100th anniversary of Arkansas State University-Jonesboro. Campus events kicked off on April 1, 2009 with a Founder’s Day ceremony commemorating the passage of Act 100. This act, signed by Governor George Donaghey on April 1, 1909, created four agricultural schools – one in each part of the state. The Centennial Finale of October 3, 2010 concluded the celebration with the anniversary of the first actual day of classes at the resulting agricultural school located in Jonesboro.
Prior to the campus launch in April of 2009, Arkansas State University-Jonesboro proudly joined its sister schools for a series of pre-anniversary events, including a ceremonial reenactment of Act 100 of 1909 at the State Capitol Rotunda in Little Rock. These schools are known today as Arkansas Tech University, Russellville; Southern Arkansas University-Magnolia; and the University of Arkansas-Monticello.
All four schools have experienced success over the years, with Arkansas State University-Jonesboro leading the way. Now considered one of the top universities in the southern region of the country, ASU-Jonesboro has matured into a comprehensive university offering 37 degrees through the doctoral level in 168 fields of study and ten colleges. The record fall 2010 enrollment of 13,438 is a major leap from the 189 students who started classes in temporary downtown quarters on October 3, 1910.
These pages are designed to provide a brief glimpse of our first 100 years in order to appreciate our shared past, understand our present, and serve as a bridge to our second century.
