We are seeking energetic individuals who are eager to help our students.  Some of the skill sets we seek in the RA staff include:  strong communication skills; leadership experience; the ability to build a sense of pride in the buildings; and the ability to exercise good judgment, especially in a crisis situation.  The RA also enforces department and campus rules and regulations.

How to Apply for RA Fall 2013-Spring 2014

All applicants must submit a Resident Assistant Application and their resume to applyRA@astate.edu by February 8, 2013 at 3 p.m.

Appointment Period

Resident Assistants’ appointments are made for an academic year. However, based on justifiable reasons such as violation of policy, insubordination, etc., a Resident Assistant’s position may be terminated.

Academic Requirement

If a Resident Assistant’s semester grade point average falls between 2.00-2.24 for any given semester, the Resident Assistant will be given one semester to raise the average above a 2.25 while participating in the academic assistance program. At any point, if the cumulative GPA falls below 2.5, it will result in immediate termination.

Pay and Benefits (2013-2014)

Resident Assistants receive $2320.00 per semester disbursed in semi-monthly paychecks. As a condition of employment, staff will reside in a private room, based on availability, paid for by RA scholarship. Resident Assistants in CP, RWD, NPQ, RSC, and HLLC will be assigned to an apartment or suite with a roommate(s) you may select. Failure to select in a timely manner may result in the Department of Residence Life assigning someone. Staff members receiving the Astate Scholar, Astate Leadership, or Astate Pride scholarships do not receive the Housing Scholarship to cover their Room costs as the academic scholarship covers it. However those students will receive the amount of the RA scholarship in the form of an increased rate of pay depending on the amount of the RA scholarship.

Job Qualifications

In order to be considered for a Resident Assistant position you must:

~Have a minimum of one semester residence living on a college/university campus

~Be a full time student with at least 24 hours of college credit (60 credit hours for Collegiate Park & Red Wolf Den)

~Have at least a 2.5 cumulative GPA and maintain that along with a 2.25 each semester of employment

~Have the ability to relate to others

Interviews

All applicants must participate in the selection retreat and interview processes on Friday and Saturday March 8th and 9th.

Resume and Cover Letter Information

You must submit a cover letter and resume with the Resident Assistant application. Please respond to the information below when creating your cover letter and resume.

Cover Letter

The cover letter should be in standard business letter style. You should use the address provided on the application as the address that you wish to send the letter. The letter should be addressed to Nadia Eslinger Area Coordinator for the Department Residence Life. 

  • The first paragraph should state the reason for the letter and the specific position for which you are applying.
  • The second paragraph should state why you are applying for the RA position. Briefly summarize your reasons for wanting a staff position. You will also want to describe your experience living in the residence halls.
  • The third paragraph should state what extra-curricular activities you have participated in, why you chose these activities and what you have learned from them. How will what you have learned in these activities help you to be a better RA?
  • The last paragraph should be the clincher paragraph. You will want to list your skills and traits that will make you a candidate we will want to hire. How will these skills contribute to your success as a RA?

Resume

Create a resume that expresses you. However, remember to stay within the business guidelines that govern traditional resumes. Your resume style may differ according to your major. Graphic design resumes will be more artistic and expressive, whereas a business major will usually have the one page traditional format. For assistance with your resume, visit the Career Management Center (formerly Career Services Office) for samples and critiquing.

The following four categories must be covered on your resume:

Education

What type of degree are you pursuing? What is your anticipated graduation date? What institutions have you attended/graduated from?

Related or Job Experience

List other jobs that you have had in the past (be sure to list the most recent position first). Include the dates of your employment. Please describe the responsibilities you had with these jobs. Mention any significant accomplishments and/or skills that you obtained.

Activities/Honors

List any campus activities that you have participated in at ASU or other institutions (including high school, if necessary). These can be clubs, fraternities, sororities, military service, athletic teams, etc. Emphasize activities/honors that could relate to the RA position.

Credentials/References

List names, address, phone numbers and email of at least three references.

Resident Assistant

POSITION DESCRIPTION

The RA position within the Department of Residence Life is a live-in position, which requires the RA to reside on a floor or in a building housing 25 to 65 students. The RA works under the supervision and direction of a Hall Director (HD)/Graduate Hall Director (HD/GHD) and an Area Coordinator (AC). Within his/her unit, the RA is responsible for creating and promoting a community environment that is conducive to and enhances the personal growth and development of all residents, utilizing educational and social programming, counseling and/or mentoring to residents, and promoting student responsibility, while fulfilling administrative expectations.

Responsibilities in the paid leadership position of RA are numerous, and the RA is the focal point for the day-to-day operation of his/her floor. The RA is at one time: student, community developer, referral agent, business manager, peer, friend, and disciplinarian. Simply stated, the RA position is the most comprehensive student leadership position attainable at Arkansas State University. This diversity of roles and responsibilities is challenging and calls on the RA to develop organizational and interpersonal skills. The position of RA provides an opportunity to maximize self-development, maturity, and confidence during the college years.

5. How to work through/solve personal concerns and problems in a multicultural society.
