In pursuit of this commitment, ASU-Jonesboro Department of Residence Life seeks an Area Coordinator for Living Learning Communities (AC-LLC). The Area Coordinator reports directly to the Assistant Director of Residence Life for Residence Education and is responsible for providing oversight to residence student housing at the university, supervision and mentorship of Graduate Hall Directors and other para-professional staff.

Function of Position

The AC-LLC role is an integral component to the success of the Residence Education area for Residence Life. The AC-LLC is responsible for guiding and coaching their Graduate Hall Directors to create a community where academics, diversity, and community involvement are honored. The AC-LLC facilitates an environment within the residence hall that contributes to the development of students and staff academically, intellectually, socially, physically and culturally. The AC-LLC articulates to staff the philosophy and policies of Residence Life, the Division of Student Affairs, and the University while representing and presenting the needs of the students to the administration. The AC-LLC role is one of leadership, trust and honor, and contributes significantly to the personal growth and development of his/her staff members and the residents in their area.

Skills and Responsibilities

I. Managerial: Manage a multi-building residential area

  • Assume responsibility for area safety and security. Participates in all safety training and collaborates with other campus offices as needed to maintain a high level of building safety
  • Report and follow up on maintenance and housekeeping concerns in and around the residential facilities
    • Establish a close working relationship with Residence Life Maintenance and Residence Life Housekeeping
    • Participate in bi-semester facilities inspection with Associate Director for Facilities and designees from maintenance and housekeeping
  • The AC-LLC provides leadership to staff by communicating, interpreting, and administering residence hall and University policies and procedures
  • The AC-LLC maintains visibility in the halls through regular hall visits and attendance at staff and student programs
  • Maintains a working knowledge of and collaborates with campus departments and community agencies
  • Perform other related duties as required or assigned

II. Administration: Provide administrative oversight to designated staff & halls

  • Attend bi-monthly Residence Education staff meetings and weekly professional staff meetings. Attends meetings as determined by supervisor and other departmental and divisional meetings as requested
  • Participates in Graduate Hall Director staff recruitment and selection processes as assigned
  • Select, train, supervise, develop and evaluate a team of Graduate Hall Directors
  • Provide oversight to GHD’s in their supervision of the Resident Assistant (55) and Desk Assistant staffs
  • Serve as a daily communication link between the Department of Residence Life's office and the Graduate Hall Directors. Coordinates communication and timely transfer of information between GHDs/halls and Residence Life main office 
  • Administer area budgets
  • Prepare weekly and annual reports that outline achievements and make recommendations
  • Approves timesheets for assigned staff
  • Performs administrative duties including: budget/spreadsheet management, maintaining records, overseeing check-ins, check-outs and moves; and maintaining hall specific forms
  • Ensures Resident Assistant and desk staff have completed all appropriate human resources and payroll paperwork before starting their job duties and completes appropriate termination paperwork when necessary
  • Performs other related duties as assigned

III. Student Development Educator - Facilitate student growth & development

  • Provide oversight and resources for applicable programs in your area:
    • Living-Learning Communities
      • First Year Residential Experience (Arkansas, Kays, University)
      • Honors Living Learning Community
      • ROTC/STEM Den Community
    • Upper-class development
    • Theme housing (Service Leadership)
    • Peer Academic Leaders (PALS) in the FYRE buildings
  • Works collaboratively with faculty and academic partners through academic initiatives in the hall
  • Advise and educate residents on life skills
    • Implement programs designed to meet the developmental needs of a diverse residence hall/apartment population utilizing the Programming Model for your area(s)
    • Support hall staff and hall government programs
  • Serve as a resource person and make appropriate referrals
  • Interpret University/hall policies and function as student conduct hearing officer as needed by the Office of Student Conduct
  • Follows the progressive discipline procedure with staff when there is a need for corrective action needed
  • Serve on University/Division/Departmental committees
  • Coordinate departmental projects such as RA class, NRHH, Rho Alpha Sigma, RHA, Staff selection, etc.
  • Participate in on-call rotation for campus crisis intervention
  • Serve as an advocate for students
  • Mediate student conflicts
  • Fosters an environment in their area that encourages the acceptance of a diverse student population and fosters dialogue between and among others
  • Facilitate the development of community within the residence halls
  • Performs other related duties as assigned

IV. Student Development Educator - Promote staff development 

  • Participate and contribute to the RA/CA selection process and training as assigned
  • Provide ongoing feedback to hall staff concerning job performance. Participates in the formal and informal evaluation process completing evaluations with staff to provide effective feedback on performance each semester
  • Meet weekly with Graduate Assistant staff both as a group and individually
  • Disseminate relevant information to staff, build trust and unity within staff, and provide leadership through area meetings and other staff development tools
  • Participate in University activities, projects, and committees that will promote personal and professional development
  • Participate in state, regional, and national professional developmental activities such as workshops, conferences, and associations.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned

V. Professionalism

  • Model appropriate professional and ethical behavior
  • Provides leadership, mentoring and role modeling for student staff and hall residents
  • Seeks knowledge and information to develop oneself professionally
  • Adheres to ACUHO-I professional standards
  • Represents Residence Life at seminars and conferences
  • Presents workshops and seminars to staff and students
  • Maintains an awareness of student and staff concerns through formal contacts (i.e., office hours,
  • appointments) and informal interactions
  • Performs other related duties as assigned

Supervisory Responsibilities

The AC-LLC supervises the Graduate Hall Director staff in their assigned area.

Supervision Received

The Area Coordinator reports to and is supervised by the Assistant Director for Residence Education. Verbal contact is expected on a frequent basis. Written reports may be expected concerning specific situations. Decisions involving their area should be communicated to the Assistant Director and may be made in consultation with her.

Time Commitment

This is a 40-hour per week position with irregular hours and occasional night and weekend time expected. For this reason, the Area Coordinator’s work day is from 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. with a 1 hour lunch. Area Coordinators who are not on-call are expected to assist in a major campus emergency when needed and as available.

On-Call Rotation

Area Coordinators take part in an on-call duty rotation. The Area Coordinator on duty is restricted to the city of Jonesboro and will respond as appropriate to emergency or crisis situations on campus. Area Coordinators are provided a university issued cellular phone.

Professional Development

Area Coordinators are expected and encouraged to participate in professional development opportunities such as regional conferences, seminars, ACUHO-I conferences, etc. Area Coordinators are provided a professional development budget to utilize for conference/seminar registration and travel costs as approved by the Assistant Director of Residence Education. ACs may have the opportunity to increase professional development funds by holding leadership positions within regional organizations as well as by proposing and presenting programs for conferences.

Qualifications

Education

A Master's degree in College Student Personnel, Higher Education Administration, Counseling or related field is required.

Experience
  • Two to three years of residence hall management experience is preferred post Masters degree 
  • Experience with community living, and leadership development
  • Knowledge of how to plan and organize events for students
  • Strong oral and written communication skills and strong organizational and administrative skills are preferred

Remuneration

The compensation package includes an annual salary of $29,251.00 and University benefits which include a comprehensive health plan, life insurance, TIAA-CREF or Arkansas Public Employees Retirement System, and paid leave. A furnished on campus house with utilities is provided as a condition of employment.

Problem Solving and Confidentiality

Because of the sensitive nature of incidents involving students, the staff member must be able to deal with students, parents, staff, and faculty in confidential matters. Additionally, he/she must be able to generate solutions, collaborate with others, demonstrate initiative and display personal resiliency. Area Coordinators are required to exercise critical thinking skills to adapt and interpret situations in which the application is not clearly defined.

Knowledge of Equipment Needed to Perform the Tasks

Computer, cell phone, calculator, telephone, photocopier, fax machine and web-based technologies.

Authority

The AC-LLC has the authority to make operational decisions for the residence halls he/she oversees with general direction from the Assistant Director. The Area Coordinator is responsible for maintaining and staying within budget and staffing guidelines as established by his/her direct supervisor.
