    Important Reminders

    • CAPP degree evaluation reports are considered UNOFFICIAL. Final approval for graduation by the student's departmental advisor and Office of Admissions, Records and Registration is still required.
    • CAPP degree evaluation is not intended to take the place of regular academic advising.
    • CAPP can only check degree requirements for bulletin years beginning Fall 2011 to present for Undergraduate programs and Fall 2015 to present for Graduate programs. Requirements for previous bulletin years are not available.
    • Undeclared majors and undecided students must use the "What-If Analysis" in order to check degree requirements for desired degree programs.

    General Information

    • What is CAPP?

Curriculum, Advising, and Program Planning (CAPP) is a degree evaluation tool that provides the ability for students to track their progress toward the completion of their degree(s). The CAPP degree evaluation report shows how A-State courses, transfer courses, and courses in progress apply toward degree requirements. The “What-If Analysis” function of CAPP can evaluate the student’s academic record against the requirements toward another degree program.
    • How can I find more information about my degree plan or courses in my program?

All degree plans and course descriptions are found in the A-State bulletins. A link to your designated bulletin can be found on the degree evaluation report in the Program Evaluation section at the top. Some courses will have a direct hyperlink that will take you to the specific course information. More complex requirements will have notes detailing the requirements and specific information regarding these can be found in your corresponding bulletin.
    • Are there requirements that CAPP doesn't check?

Yes. CAPP does not check requirements for program admission or certification. Also, some degree programs have enhanced requirements that exceed the minimum university requirements - e.g. higher overall GPA, major GPA, stricter residency requirements, etc.
    • What is a "What-If" Analysis?

The "What-If" option allows you to run an evaluation for a program at A-State other than the one in which you are currently declared. This option can also be used when generating an evaluation for a second major and to help guide undeclared/undecided students. Please refer to the User Guide for step by step instructions on how to run a "What-If" analysis.

    Catalog Terms

    • What does Catalog Term mean?

Catalog Term corresponds to a bulletin year (e.g. 2016 Fall, 2017 Spring, and 2017 Summer correspond to the 2016-17 bulletin).
    • What do I do if CAPP lists my Catalog Term incorrectly?

To update your Catalog Term, contact the department of your major. They will need to complete a change of major form through the Office of Admissions, Records and Registration. In the meantime, you can run a "What-If" analysis.

    Majors and Minors

    • What do I do if CAPP lists my major incorrectly?

To update your major, contact the department of your major. They will need to complete a change of major form through the Office of Admissions, Records and Registration. In the meantime, you can run a "What-If" analysis.
    • I'm a double degree student; how can I check my other degree's requirements?

If you are a double degree student, you will need to run each of your degree evaluation reports separately. You should see both programs when generating a new evaluation. Select the program you would like to run the evaluation on and proceed.
    • I'm a double major student and I'm confused by the degree evaluation results; what should I do?

If you are a double major student and select the "Generate New Evaluation" link, both sets of degree requirements will appear in the evaluation which may result in a confusing report. Double major students are advised to use the "What-If Analysis" to run an evaluation against each major separately. Please refer to the User Guide for step by step instructions on how to run a "What-If" analysis.
    • I'm an undecided or undeclared major. Can I still use the degree audit system?

Yes. Use the "What-If Analysis" option to request a degree evaluation for your desired major. Please refer to the User Guide for step by step instructions on how to run a "What-If" analysis.
    • I'm an Interdisciplinary Studies or General Studies major. Can I still use the degree audit system?

Yes. CAPP will display all degree requirements for these majors except for the emphasis and thematic areas. Students with one of these majors will still need to consult with their departmental advisor to evaluate their progress in these areas.
    • How do I check to see if I have met the requirements for a minor?

As long as your minor is declared (i.e. appears on your transcript), its requirements will appear towards the bottom of your degree evaluation report. If your minor does not appear, you will need to contact your academic advisor. They will complete a change of major form through the Office of Admissions, Records and Registration. In the meantime, you can run a "What-If" analysis.

    Placement of Courses

    • How does CAPP decide where to place courses that I've completed?

CAPP processes your courses based on the way the requirements are defined by the department in which your program resides. It will assign each course to the first requirement in your degree program that the course will fulfill, starting at the top of the evaluation and proceeding towards the bottom.
    • The degree evaluation placed one of my courses in two places. Is that okay?

Generally a course will not show up in more than one place on the degree evaluation. However, there are a few exceptions. For example, CAPP is programmed to calculate upper-level hours for all bachelor's degrees. The Upper-Level area at the bottom of the degree evaluation will duplicate courses previously used to complete degree requirements.
    • Who do I contact about having a course substitution or waiver approved?

Your department must approve any course substitutions or waivers. If approved, your department will submit a Departmental Course Substitution Approval Form to the Office of Admissions, Records and Registration. Please see your advisor to initiate the process.
    • How will courses that have been substituted or waived appear on my degree evaluation report?

These adjustments will appear on your degree evaluation report once they are processed by the Office of Admissions, Records and Registration. The substituted course will appear next to the original requirements and may be noted by an "SB" in the Source column. Waivers will be noted as "waived" alongside the requirement.
    • I tested out of a class but it's not showing up on my degree evaluation report. What should I do?

The system will recognize credit obtained by exams (e.g. AP, CLEP, etc.) and this information will appear in the degree evaluation where applicable. If your credit is not showing up, please ensure your official test scores have been submitted to the Office of Admissions, Records and Registration.
    • Does my CAPP evaluation include the classes I am currently taking?

Yes, CAPP will display in-progress work including future terms that you have already registered for. However, if you are repeating a course that you previously received credit for, the registered course will not be selected until the end of the term when the system performs its end of term processing.
    • What courses show up under "Courses Not Used"?

Any course with an unacceptable or incomplete grade will appear in the Courses Not Used section of the evaluation. Courses that were repeated and excluded will also appear in this section. Credit earned that is not required for your degree (e.g. remedial, developmental, ESL, etc.) will also appear under Courses Not Used.

    Grade Point Averages

    • Will CAPP calculate my major GPA?

Major GPA is calculated differently in different departments. Students should consult with their advisor regarding specific major GPA requirements.
    • What is the overall grade point average that is listed at the top of my evaluation?

The overall grade point average is your cumulative grade point average to date. Please check with your department for additional GPA requirements.

    Resolving Errors or Questions

    • Why does nothing happen when I select "Generate New Evaluation"?

You must select the radio button next to the program to "Generate New Evaluation". If you don't, you will receive a message "Please ensure a valid program was entered".
    • What if I think my evaluation is wrong?

If you believe there are mistakes in your degree evaluation report, you should first consult with your departmental advisor.
    • Who do I contact if I still have questions?

If you still have questions after reading the information provided on this web page, please contact your departmental advisor or email capp@astate.edu.
