October 2016

syllabusupload

For the month of October, ITS would like to showcase an application created by one our department's very own, Michael Gonzales. This application was designed to assist Instructors, Deans, Chairs, and students in the uploading, reviewing, and viewing of Syllabi. Instructors can login to the system to upload syllabi or see all of the courses that they instruct. Deans and Chair can login to the system to see of syllabi for the courses relevant to them have been uploaded and if they are set to standards. Students can access this program through Banner and use it to view the syllabi for their courses.

The first version of this program was developed in late 2015 and the current version was completed early this year with added options for reviewing. Both versions were created by Michael Gonzales, here at ITS. It can be used anywhere with a secure internet connection by using a login page through the MyCampus portal.

The original process was handled "by hand", where instructors would send their syllabi to their office the office would collect them, review them individually, and eventually send them to another group who would edit them and upload them to a location where they could be downloaded by students. The application was developed to reduce the amount of duplication and number of steps in the process. Now, there is one uploaded file that is automatically places in the correct place to be available for download, while still being available for review by the Deans and Chairs.
