We look forward to having your new employee complete orientation. We will cover many important topics such as ASU’s history, mission, vision, values and culture. We also will discuss Human Resource Policies and Procedures, benefits and pay and introduce many campus resources and services available for your new employee.
Since new employees are in an ongoing assimilation status for a couple of months, I encourage you to provide your employee with a job description along with a copy of the performance appraisal form.
The first months in a new employment environment may be a confusing and critical time for a new employee. Your efforts in setting expectations and aligning your employee's performance relative to the job requirements are critical towards fulfilling departmental objectives and the university's strategic goals.
Your employee is certain to have questions, yet he/she may be hesitant to ask them. To make this process easier for both of you, please review the Supervisor's checklist for the first day and the Supervisor's checklist for the 2nd day through the first two weeks. These forms and the information provided will go a long way towards providing the best possible jumpstart for your new employee.
The forms should be completed and kept in the employee's departmental file. Please complete these forms within two weeks of the employee's University New Employee Onboarding.

How To Make Sure Your New Employee Succeeds
How many hours have you spent screening, interviewing, checking references, and working with Employment Services to hire a new employee?
If you’ve interviewed the applicants thoroughly and completed all the paperwork, you’ve probably invested a lot of time. But don’t rest now! It is a wise supervisor who also invests time in getting new employees off to a good start. Hiring good people and training them to work successfully can yield outstanding results for everyone.
Here are four of the best ways you can help new employees become successful in your department:
Give your employees clear instructions.
Let them know exactly what you expect them to do, and what aspects of their daily tasks you consider to be most important and why. Remember that when an employee is not doing what he/she should be doing, it is often because the employee doesn't know how, or because he/she does not know what is expected.
Give your employees frequent, direct, and candid feedback about what they are doing.
Let them know regularly what you like and what they need to do differently in order to excel. Most employees appreciate knowing that their supervisor will be respectful, direct, and honest in giving them feedback.
Take the time to recognize the achievements and successes of your employees.
The importance of this cannot be emphasized enough! It is a fact that when a new employee does something particularly well and the supervisor takes the time to say “Nice job!” the employee’s motivation increases.
Make sure your new employee understands how important it is for all of us to provide outstanding support for and service to our students and faculty.
We know that it is the day-to-day, moment-by-moment interactions each of us have with faculty and students that reflect our University ’s image and reputation. Encourage your employees to do their part in making sure our image is one of excellent service, friendliness, and hard work.
