Frequently Asked Questions
What will the iPad be used for at ASU?
All incoming students complete both a Making Connections course and a linked general education course. This is the first six hours of the undergraduate curriculum. The Making Connections course will be taught on the iTunesU and iBooks platform. Selected general education will also be taught on the iTunesU and iBooks platform.
We anticipate that integration of iPads into your courses will continue throughout your undergraduate career.
Why the iPad?
We chose the iPad because it consolidates many educational tools including textbooks, classic novels, science probes, calculators, calendars, cameras, video recorders, maps, dictionaries, and organizers. Additionally, the iPad is fully integrated with the iTunesU platform. This is the only tablet solution with a content development and delivery platform built into the device.
I already have an iPad. Will I need to purchase another one?
No. If you already have an iPad2, new iPad, or iPad mini, you can use it for the 2013-2014 academic year.
You can use iPad 1s, however, please be aware that iPad 1s may have limitations. We will try to accommodate any limitations to the best of our ability. It is preferable to have an iPad 2 or newer iPad.
Can I use my Macbook or Laptop instead of buying an iPad?
No. You will need to have an iPad to access your Making Connections iBook and your Common Reader iBook. iBooks are only viewable on iPads.
Can I use my iPhone instead of buying or renting an iPad?
No. You will need an iPad to be able to view your iBooks. iBooks are not viewable on iPhones.
Where can I purchase an iPad and the Connect Kit?
The IT Store, located on the A-State campus, has iPads and the Connect Kits, which will be required for all incoming freshmen. The store is ready to help! The IT Store is located on the ground floor of Wilson Hall. Enter the side of the building facing of the arch.
What do I get in the Connect Kit? Where do I buy a Connect Kit?
The Connect Kit includes your common reader book Zeitoun, your Making Connections book, six apps, and a $25.00 gift card to use towards a case or anything you like in the A-State IT Store. You can only buy a Connect Kit at the A-State IT Store. When you purchase your Connect Kit, you will receive a $25.00 gift card immediately to use in the A-State IT store. The information to download your apps and books will be given to you on the first day of your Making Connections class.
What apps are in the Connect Kit?
The required apps are included in the Connect Kit. These include Pages, Numbers, Keynote, Garage Band, iPhoto, and iMovie.
If I reserve an iPad 4th generation or mini and Connect Kit online for purchase, when do I pick it up?
You can pick it up beginning on April 29 at the first New Student Orientation (if you make your reservation by April 15.) We will hold your iPad and Connect Kit at the IT Store until you come to pick it up - even if you can't come by until the first week of school this fall.
You can reserve your iPad and Connect Kit by visiting http://www.astate.edu/connect and filling out the reserve form.
What if I reserve an iPad and Connect Kit and I buy one in the meantime? Am I obligated to buy the one I reserved?
No. We do ask that you call the A-State IT Store so that we can cancel your reservation and we can prepare your iPad and Connect Kit for another student. You will still need to come to the A-State IT Store and buy your Connect Kit.
What if I want to rent an iPad? How long can I keep my rental?
The cost to rent an iPad will be $50.00 per semester. The maximum rental cost of the iPad will be $150.00 per year (spring, summer, and fall terms.) The $50.00 is to be paid at the A-State IT Store.
The iPad rentals are refurbished pre-4th generation iPads. iPads for rent can be picked up at the IT Store during the first week of school.
You will still need to buy a Connect Kit (which includes your Making Connections book, the Common Reader book Zeitoun, the six required apps, and a $25.00 gift card to the IT Store) at a cost of $48.00. The $25.00 gift card to the IT Store will be made immediately available at the time of purchase. The apps and books in the Connect Kit will be made available to all students on the first day of the Making Connections class.
You can return your rental iPad at the end of any term. Your apps and iBooks will be yours to keep as these will be associated with your Apple ID and accessible from other devices.
Please note that over time purchasing a new iPad at $329.00 + tax may be more cost effective than renting one.
You will need to complete the "Reserve your iPad" form by June 30, 2013 for the rental option. More information will be provided to you on the rental in your email.
Will I still have to buy textbooks for my courses?
Yes. Students will still have to purchase textbooks. The two required books for the Making Connections class are included in the Connect Kit.
If the required textbooks for your other courses are available electronically, the costs may be lower. If no electronic version is available, students will have to purchase a standard textbook. Our goal is that more and more classes will utilize electronic textbooks on the iPad.
Will there be any iPad training for students?
Yes. ASU will provide training through the Making Connections course, in addition to online videos and tutorials in our knowledgebase that is available to ASU Students.
Can students install their own apps?
Yes. All content on the iPad will be the property of the student and linked to the students Apple ID.
What happens if an iPad gets broken, lost or stolen?
When you purchase your iPad, you may also purchase the Apple Care Protection Plan. You should also check with your homeowners or renters insurance to see if loss or damage to an iPad would or could be covered.
If my iPad breaks and is being repaired, will I be disadvantaged in class?
No. If you obtained your iPad through ASU, you will be provided with a loaner unit for use while your iPad is being repaired. IT Store staff will help you sync the loaner unit with your iTunes content.
What methods of payment does the IT Store accept?
The A-State IT Store accepts credit cards and you can use your Express Dollars. With the new student IDs, students can use their ID as a Discover card, which is accepted. The store does not accept cash or checks.
