Lecture-Concert Series Will Feature Artists Performing Classical Persian and Folklore Music

09/10/2013

JONESBORO – The first presentation in the 2013-14 Lecture-Concert Series will be a performance of “Classical Persian and Folklore Music,” Tuesday, Sept. 17, announced Dr. Tim Crist, chair of the Lecture-Concert Committee and professor of music at Arkansas State University.

Golnaz Khazei and Bahareh Moghtadaei, two of the six members of the popular Iranian ensemble Rozaneh, will present their musical program on authentic Kurdish instruments.  They also will sing texts from classical poems and prayers used in both the Persian and Kurdish cultures.

The concert begins at 7:30 p.m. in the Recital Hall of the Fine Arts Center, 2412 Quapaw Way.  All presentations in the Lecture-Concert Series are admission-free and open to the public.

This Lecture-Concert Series presentation is supported in part by A-State Diversity Initiatives, Department of Music, and College of Fine Arts, Crist added.

Khazei, a native of Tehran, moved to the United States in May 2010 and now lives in Huntsville, Ala.  She conducts private classes in the daf, a percussion instrument created by the Kurds of Iran, and the santour, a string instrument.  In her musical studies, she researched the styles of daf as it relates to various cultures.

Moghtadaei is a board-certified neurologic music therapist, founder of Mind and Music Therapy Center, and a master percussionist.  She earned a BA degree in music from Sooreh University in Tehran and continued her education in music therapy at California State University, Northridge.  She has extensive clinical experience in music therapy through hospitals and clinics in California, where she now lives.

Included in the concert will be performances on the tar, considered to be the mother of all instruments in Iran, the 72-string santour (thick-hammered dulcimer), and the daf and tombak percussion instruments.

The Lecture-Concert Series serves Arkansas State University and the surrounding communities in bringing to the A-State campus notable guest speakers and performers of diverse backgrounds and wide appeal, Crist said.  Many of the Lecture-Concert Series events include additional campus activities as well as community outreach projects that enhance the quality of life and culture.

The complete schedule for the 2013-14 Lecture-Concert Series, including performers’ biographies and photographs, is available on the A-State website.  Interested individuals may find complete details about each guest, including biographies, interviews, videos, sound clips and itineraries.
